What makes an organic wine, organic?
Wine comes in many varieties, but besides white or red, it also differs between organic and non-organic. The difference lies primarily in the viticulture. Various agents can be used in the production of "regular" wine. These include pesticides and fertilizers, as well as additives such as sugar, yeast, enzymes, and sulfites. Besides additives, organic winemaking also prohibits the use of technical aids. Think, for example, of separation techniques to alter the composition of the must or wine. An organic wine is only considered organic if no chemical pesticides or fertilizers have been used in the vineyard where the grapes originate. Sugar, yeast, and acid may be added.
Besides organic wine, there is also natural wine. The primary considerations in this case are the amount of added sulfites. For example, a traditional wine may contain a maximum of 150 mg for red wine and 200 mg for white wine. For organic wine, the maximum is 100 mg for red and 150 mg for white. A natural wine must comply with an even lower limit. The maximum for red wine is 30 mg, and for white wine, 40 mg. Therefore, the difference between organic wine and sulfite content lies primarily in its production process.
Pay attention to the quality mark
Organic wine, like other organic products, carries a quality mark. This guarantees its origin and ensures that the wine was grown organically. The term "organic" is legal, and there are strict requirements that farmers must meet. These include legal regulations and the company's organic certification. In addition to the quality mark, certain information is mandatory on the wine label. This includes information on the alcohol percentage and whether the wine contains sulfites. If sulfites haven't been added, they are still naturally present. People with sulfite allergies should always pay close attention to this.
Is organic wine healthier?
Whether organic or natural wine is healthier than standard wine is not entirely clear. However, organic wine is, of course, produced more cleanly. For example, no pesticides are used, and in most cases, the nitrate content is lower. The addition of sulfites is also limited. A cleaner production process with minimal or no additives is generally healthier for humans, but has a significant impact on the environment. Because strict legal regulations are adhered to during the production process, the result is a clean and natural wine. In that sense, organic wine is healthier than standard wine.
Organic wine for the true wine lover
So why choose organic wine? It all comes down to quality. The grapes grown in organic wineries are of excellent quality. This type of winemaking involves paying extra attention to the plants, resulting in a unique flavor. As a true wine lover, you'll definitely notice the difference. Besides the flavor, you're also choosing to conserve nature and minimize your impact on the environment. That makes it a well-considered choice.
