History of Pommery
Pommery's roots go back to the middle of the 19th century. The champagne brand Pommery was founded in 1836 by Louise Pommery. Louise was also the creator of the first brut champagne ever. However, it was not until 1874 that Victor Lambert ensured that this brut champagne was developed and became popular.
Louise Pommery was on the road a lot and noticed that the taste of the English elite was changing. The preference was increasingly towards a less sweet and light type of wine. Although Louise saw this preference, it was Victor Lambert (successor of Olivier Damas, the cellar master of Pommery) who created the first brut, namely the 'Pommery Nature 1874'.
At that time, the production of brut champagnes was still in its infancy. Many technical changes had to be made. For example, the harvests had to be postponed so that the grapes were even riper. In addition, the bottle maturation in the cellar had to be extended and more base wines were added for a desired taste balance. Risky, but thanks to the vision and determination of Louise Pommery, it became a true revolution!
